Emu

Impact Story

Emu is village the in Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State. The community has long been known for its rich soil and resilient people. But for a long time, life in Emu was marked by poor sanitation. The community lacked a single public toilet. Families were forced to defecate in nearby bushes and fields.
Many waited until nightfall to relieve themselves, exposing themselves to snake bites and harassment. Girls often missed school, especially during their menstrual periods, due to the absence of safe and private toilets.
When Lifewater visited Emu and witnessed the severity of the sanitation challenge, our team worked hand-in-hand with the community to construct clean, durable toilets. The transformation was swift and powerful. What once seemed impossible has now become a reality for the people of Emu.
Families now use the toilets with pride and confidence. Women and girls feel safe, and open defecation has come to an end in the community. The community is grateful for this transformation and sees the new toilet as a gift of hope and health for generations to come.
