Impact Story

Agwada is a semi-rural community in Gwagwalada where most residents are smallholder farmers and traders. For years, families struggled with the lack of proper sanitation facilities. Households relied on open defecation, often in bushes or along drainage paths, which led to unhygienic conditions, foul smells, and frequent outbreaks of diarrhea diseases among children. The absence of toilets also compromised privacy and safety, particularly for women and girls, who often had to wait until nightfall to relieve themselves away from public view. With the construction of a new community toilet by Lifewater, residents now have a safe and private place to defecate. The facility has drastically reduced exposure to human waste, lowered the risk of water contamination, and improved overall health. Mothers report fewer cases of illness, and the environment around the homes has become cleaner and more dignified. Agwada community members are deeply thankful to Lifewater for this intervention, recognizing it as a step toward safer sanitation, healthier living, and stronger community well-being.
