Gidan Mai Akuya I

Impact Story

Gidan Mai Akuya I is a close-knit rural community in Lafia East Local Government Area where subsistence farming and small-scale trading support daily life.

Before the intervention, the community had no functional water system and depended largely on hand-dug pits and water vendors. During the dry season, the pits would dry up completely, forcing families to buy water at high cost or travel to neighbouring settlements. Even when available, the water was often unsafe, leading to frequent cases of diarrhoea and skin infections. The stress of securing water affected both household routines and economic activities.

Lifewater responded by drilling a new borehole in Mai Akuya I, providing the community with a safe and reliable water source for the first time. Families no longer spend money on unsafe water or travel long distances to fetch it. Hygiene has improved, and cases of water-related illness have reduced.
