Impact Story

Akala is a remote settlement in Lafia East Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where many families are involved in farming, basket weaving, and small trading alongside their daily village activities. The community is peaceful, but for many years, getting water was filled with danger and fear. Before Lifewater came, the people

depended on very deep hand-dug wells for water. The wells were unsafe, especially for children, because the edges were weak and slippery. At one point, a child fell into one of the wells, causing fear across the community. After that incident, families stopped allowing children to fetch water. Only adults were trusted to draw water from the deep wells, and this placed more pressure on women who already handled most household responsibilities. Because of the risk, residents placed old tyres around the wells to help prevent people from slipping inside while fetching water. Even with those efforts, many women still feared going close to the wells, especially during the rainy season when the ground became wet and unstable. Daily life became stressful as families worried not only about getting water, but also about staying safe while fetching it. Recognizing this urgent need, Lifewater drilled a new borehole for Akala, providing a safe, reliable water source close to home. For the first time, families could access water freely without fear of accidents or injury. Women no longer struggle with the dangerous deep wells, and children are safe from the risks that once surrounded water fetching. What used to be a risky and stressful task has 07017325348
