For over three years, the community’s two hand pumps have been in disrepair; as a result, the community has been having issues with water scarcity.
Water shortage in Gwako is made worse by the cycles of floods and drought, population growth, and the unequal distribution of water resources. Most households rely on buying bulk water from vendors, spending an average of one US dollar in getting water from vendors daily, depending on the size and needs of the family. Buying water from vendors comes at a cost to the finance and health of most residents because the water is expensive and not safe. With the rehabilitation of two wells, people now spend less time and money collecting water, meaning they can be productive in other ways. The Gwako community is grateful for the unprecedented love shown to them. |
